Template Website vs. Custom-Built — What's Actually Different?

Both can look fine in a screenshot. The real differences show up in speed, flexibility, and what happens when you need to change something.

A template and a custom build can look nearly identical at a glance. The differences matter more once the site is actually live and being used.

Speed

Templates carry code for every feature they support, whether you use it or not. Custom builds only ship what your site actually needs — which usually means faster load times.

Flexibility

Want a booking system, a specific layout, or an integration a template wasn't designed for? Templates hit a wall fast. Custom code doesn't have that ceiling.

Long-Term Cost

Templates are cheaper upfront, but customizing one past its limits often costs more in workaround-hours than building custom would have from the start.

When a Template Is the Right Call

Honestly — for a very simple, low-budget presence with no unusual requirements, a template can be perfectly reasonable. Custom isn't automatically the right answer for every business.
